Cricket is one of the most popular sports in Australia at national, international and local levels. The peak administrative body for both amateur and professional cricket is Cricket Australia.
International Cricket
The Australian national team is one of the most successful teams in international cricket. Along with England, Australia was recognized as one of the founder nations of the Imperial Cricket Conference, later the International Cricket Council. Australia generally plays a test series against a visiting team, and a one-day series between two other teams at home each summer, and tours overseas for the remainder of the year.
Australian Cricket Culture
In 2007, The Age reported that a poll by Sweeney Sports had discovered that 69 percent of the public has an interest in cricket, second to none. Cricket is known as Australia's national game because of its popularity in most parts of the country. Cricket is also a participation sport in Australia: a census conducted on behalf of Cricket Australia found in 2003-04 seasons there have been 471,329 participants in Australian cricket programmes and contests, such as 47,780 female participants.
Test cricket captain's position is regarded as one of the most essential roles in Australian sport. It's frequently said that in Australia Test captain's office is second in stature supporting the office of Prime Minister. Reflecting this community perception, three Australian cricket captains have been named as Australian of the Year from the National Australia Day Council; Allan Border in 1989, Mark Taylor in 1999 and Steve Waugh at 2004. Additionally, Steve Waugh has been nominated as an Australian Treasure by the National Trust of Australia, as was Don Bradman before his death in 2001.
2015 Cricket World Cup Champs!
The final of the 2015 Cricket World Cup took place on 29 March 2015 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne, Australia. It was played between the tournament's two co-hosts, New Zealand and Australia. Australia went into the game as favorites and won by 7 wickets for a fifth World Cup triumph. The match was played in front of 93,013 spectators, a record crowd for a day of cricket in Australia.
The 2015 Cricket World Cup began on 14 February and has been co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand across 14 venues. Fourteen teams were divided with the best four from each pool progressing into the quarter-finals. The final was played on 29 March and has been a contested between New Zealand and Australia in the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
It was the first World Cup Final of New Zealand. They had lost the semi-final on six occasions between 1975 and 2011. Australia played in their record final, having won four (1987, 1999, 2003 and 2007) and lost 2 (1975, 1996).
This was the second period that two co-hosts contested the final: in 2011, India defeated Sri Lanka in the final while a third co-host Bangladesh exited in the pool stages. It was also the first time since 1987 that there was no team in the final.
The game was also the last One Day International (ODI) for Australian captain Michael Clarke (who declared he would retire before the match), Brad Haddin, and New Zealand's Daniel Vettori, the latter two announcing their retirements following the match.
