As a B Badge Netball Umpire and a Netball Umpire Coach, Tester and Mentor, I use the golden rule of POSITION = VISION & VISION = DECISION
From this formula, I think that netball umpires will need to learn how to read the game so they are always in the correct place, being in the correct position will mean an umpire needs to have the appropriate vision of the courtroom and will then be able to make the correct decision in relation to any sanctions that may or may not have to be awarded during a netball match. An umpire should always prepare yourself before a game in more ways than one. An umpire should be fit enough to handle the duration. An umpire should always warm up prior to umpiring a match, a body will help in the reaction times when the ball changes hands.
Carry a rule book with you to every game. A rule book is always convenient to have available to get a rule check at half time or directly after a game. Umpires should always be current with upgrades or any rules of the present rules. Netball Australia has been quite great in having videos designed for an update or any rule change. Together with the new seasons to start or have already started in some areas, it would be beneficial to watch over the videos to make sure you are conversant with them. It is necessary to keep in mind that the gamers will be studying the rule upgrades as far so when umpiring a frequent sense approach must be obtained.
With the warm weather, stay hydrated. It's important to drink loads of water in the lead up to any umpiring as well as during a game. Staying hydrated will keep the brain working so that your umpiring standard is maintained throughout the game's period.
